What Type of wood do we use

The production of our furniture consists mainly of wood from the rain tree (Samanea Saman) Also known as Suar- or Chamcha wood. The rain tree belongs to the acacia tree family.

The Suar wood of the rain tree stands out due to its fascinating and high contrast grain. It differentiates from tree to tree, this gives each of our furniture pieces a unique touch.

The wood is also incredibly sturdy yet easy to work with, allowing us to create each piece uniquely. The rain tree even produces its own natural Oil’s protecting it from pesticides and rot.

Our wood comes from the northern regions of Thailand. The rain tree is originally from South America. However with time it has spread all over various regions of Asia. The warm climate and sufficient rainfall in the north of Thailand provides optimal conditions for the growth of the rain tree.

Beim Regenbaum handelt es sich um Tropenholz. However it is in no form an endangered species. Rain tree’s in Thailand do not naturally grow in rainforests but are rather a by-product of popular infrastructure. They serve as shade on plantations or public spaces. This creates sustainable new living space.

The rain tree

The rain tree is easy to recognize due to its distinctive tree top. With enough space the tree can reach up to 24m in height, however the diameter of its extraordinary tree top will always be wider as the tree is high. Due to this unique trait rain tree’s are often used for shade on farms, in gardens or along pavements.

The tree’s name originates from its unique method to use rain for its growth. During rainy seasons the leaves will naturally fold in a way that allows water to easily run down through the tree top and into its roots.

As a relatively fast growing species of tree the rain tree has an annual average growth rate of about 1.5 meters.

Due to its special grain and likeable features Suar wood is growing in popularity. Suar wood comes from the Samanea Saman tree.

The pride and joy of our products at Luisemöbel are our carefully chosen solid Suar wood panels. Each of them are cut from the trunk with a saw frame and then processed thoroughly. We at Luisemöbel use this method for all of our planks that go towards the craft of our solid wood furniture. Only through this method can we not only preserve the final natural look but also keep the grain over the entire surface, that way we can give each piece its unique character.

Natural features like twig stumps or ridges are maintained as they give the Suar wood its personality. After we plane and grind the surface by hand, we get a nice smooth surface that catches glances at its beautiful core whilst still remaining hygienic and easy to clean.

The finishing touch

Auch naturbedingte Merkmale wie Astlöcher oder Risse verleihen dem Suar Holz ihre Persönlichkeit. Nach dem Hobeln und Planschleifen entsteht ein über die gesamte Fläche angenehm, planes Holzstück, das faszinierende Einblicke in sein Innerstes gewährt und gleichwohl die hygienische Reinigung deutlich erleichtert.

After defining the surface the Suar Wood goes through an intricate finishing procedure: Over a long time period the surface is coated and grinded with luxurious natural oils. This creates a soft yet sturdy grip, that remains in good condition even after many years. The odorless, solvent and additive free natural product seeps deep into the wood and delivers an impressive resistance from within. This allows dirt or liquids to be easily removed with a wet towel even if the stain is old maintaining a crystal clear surface. Thanks to the total lack of chemical substances you have nothing to worry about when food comes in contact with the table.
